Gum Infection And Pregnancy

Women are very susceptible with periodontal disease and gum infection especially in the crucial stages of their life: menstruation, pregnancy and menopausal. Most pregnant women during the second or third month of their pregnancy experience bleeding and swelling of gums throughout the eight month, this condition is commonly known as gingivitis or pregnancy gingivitis.

Pregnancy gingivitis is caused by hormonal fluctuation as blood flow increases it causes gum tissues to be inflamed resulting to gingivitis. Superior oral care must be observed during pregnancy for it is a stage in a woman’s life that she is susceptible of harmful bacteria that can cause infection. Gum infection can cause harmful effects especially to the baby, it can cause premature labor and low birth weight babies. Treatment is very necessary when gum infection occurs during pregnancy and seeking help from the dentist is essential for proper treatment.
