Basic Things You Need To Know About Gum Disease And Swollen Gums

Ignorance can risk us and may even cost us our health. There are things in our life that we should know and be informed about. Simple things such as taking care of our teeth and gums and how to keep them prevented from bacteria that cause gum disease and swollen gums. Based on research sixty percent of adults are less likely to be informed and know about gums disease, bleeding gums, swollen gums and their causes and early indications.

Gum disease is a gingival infection that affects the tissues and the bones that supports the teeth. Its early stage is known as gingivitis wherein gums appear to be red in color, tender, puffy, and bleeds easily during brushing and swollen gums can be also experienced. When gingivitis is left untreated, swollen gums and bleeding gums will persist and will progress to periodontitis. During periodontitis, gum infection already spreads below the gumline affecting the tissues and the bones and when left unchecked it may trigger certain medical conditions to develop such as heart attack and stroke.

There are several factors that contribute to gum disease, and such factors should be avoided. Poor oral hygiene is the primary contributor of gum disease, swollen gums and bleeding gums. Bad habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol intake follow.

Dental problems should be given attention and need to be treated as early as possible to avoid further pain, discomfort and damage to tooth and gums and eventually tooth loss.
